Meco

Meco is the wild Atlantic escape of the Lisbon region: kilometres of open sand below the fossil cliff, a shallow lagoon for kitesurfing and paddleboarding, a low-rise village of pine trees, beach bars and fish restaurants, and some of the best sunsets in Portugal, about 45 minutes south of Lisbon by car.

Why visit Meco during a short stay near Lisbon

For guests of a short-term rental, Meco is the opposite of a sightseeing day: no monuments, no queues, just a very long beach, warm sand, a lagoon for watersports and a late lunch of grilled fish under the pines. It belongs to the municipality of Sesimbra, on the south bank of the Tagus, and it stays low-key even in August because there are no hotels towers and no train line, only a village of low houses among the trees.

The best way to experience it is to stay on the south bank of the Tagus or in central Lisbon and drive down for the day. From central Lisbon, our Trendy Apartment in Bairro Alto is about 45 minutes by car over the 25 de Abril bridge, and from the western coast our Charming Villa with 4 Suites, private pool and garden in Cascais and our Duplex Apartment with private pool in Estoril are about an hour and fifteen minutes away.

A short history of Meco

Aldeia do Meco began as a small farming and fishing settlement on the pine-covered plateau above the Atlantic, part of the Sesimbra municipality and separated from Lisbon by the river until the 25 de Abril bridge opened in 1966. Until then the coast here was reached by ferry and dirt track, which is why it was never built up like the Estoril line.

From the 1970s onwards Meco became known as a place of freedom: it was one of the first beaches in Portugal where naturism was practised openly, and it attracted artists, surfers and Lisbon families looking for a coast without concrete. Much of the surrounding land is protected as the Arriba Fóssil da Costa da Caparica landscape and by the Lagoa de Albufeira nature area, which is why the dunes, the pines and the great ochre cliff remain largely as they were.

What Meco offers

  • Long Atlantic beaches: Praia do Moinho de Baixo (Praia do Meco), Praia das Bicas and Praia do Ribeiro do Cavalo-side coves, all wide, sandy and rarely crowded outside August.
  • The fossil cliff: the ochre and white escarpment of the Arriba Fóssil, a protected geological landscape that runs north towards Costa da Caparica.
  • Lagoa de Albufeira: a shallow coastal lagoon with warm, calm water, perfect for children, kitesurfing, windsurfing and paddleboarding.
  • Sunsets and beach bars: wooden beach bars on the sand where the whole coast gathers for the sunset, with music and simple food.
  • Fish, seafood and grills: village restaurants serving grilled fish, arroz de marisco and fresh clams, most of them informal and family-run.
  • Naturist tradition: a long-established clothing-optional section between the main beach and Praia das Bicas, clearly signposted and easy to avoid if you prefer.
  • Surf, walking and pine forest: consistent Atlantic waves, surf schools in season, and sandy trails through the pines and dunes.

The people of the village

Aldeia do Meco is a real village of a few hundred residents that multiplies in summer. Local families, market gardeners and restaurant owners live here all year, alongside Lisbon residents with second homes, surfers and a small international community of remote workers who value the space and the quiet.

The mood is informal and barefoot rather than smart, and the village keeps early hours outside the summer months, when several restaurants close one or two days a week. The streets between the houses and the pines are residential, so the usual courtesies apply: slow driving on the sandy lanes, no noise late at night and nothing left behind on the dunes.

Main points of interest

  • Praia do Meco (Moinho de Baixo): the main beach, with lifeguards in season, beach bars and direct access from the village car park.
  • Praia das Bicas: the wilder beach to the north, below the fossil cliff, reached by a wooden stairway and traditionally naturist.
  • Arriba Fóssil da Costa da Caparica: the protected fossil cliff, best seen from the beach at low tide or from the clifftop viewpoints.
  • Lagoa de Albufeira: the lagoon a few minutes north, with calm water, watersports schools and a sandbar that opens to the sea.
  • Aldeia do Meco: the village itself, with its restaurants, small shops and pine-shaded lanes.
  • Cabo Espichel: the dramatic cape with its sanctuary, lighthouse and dinosaur footprints, about 25 minutes south.
  • Sesimbra: the fishing town on a sheltered bay, its castle and its fish restaurants, around 20 minutes away.
  • Parque Natural da Arrábida: the green limestone mountains and turquoise coves beyond Sesimbra, an easy add-on by car.

Suggested plan from our homes

  1. From central Lisbon, cross the 25 de Abril bridge and follow the A2 and N378, about 45 minutes to the Meco car park.
  2. Start the morning on the lagoon, where the water is warm and flat and the paddleboard and kitesurf schools are based.
  3. Move to Praia do Meco for the ocean, and walk north below the fossil cliff towards Praia das Bicas if you want more space.
  4. Have a late lunch of grilled fish in the village, or something simple at one of the beach bars on the sand.
  5. Spend the afternoon swimming, surfing or just on the sand; if you want variety, drive 20 minutes to Sesimbra for the harbour and the castle.
  6. Return to the beach for the sunset, which is the moment the whole coast comes out for, and stay for dinner and a drink at the bar.

Good to know before you go

  • There is no train to Meco. Come by car over the 25 de Abril bridge on the A2 and N378, about 45 minutes from central Lisbon, or take a bus from Praça de Espanha or Sete Rios towards Sesimbra and Aldeia do Meco.
  • Parking is on sand and gravel beside the village and fills up by mid-morning in July and August; arriving before 11:00 makes the day much easier.
  • The Atlantic here is open ocean: cool water, strong shorebreak and currents. Swim between the lifeguard flags in season and take care with children.
  • Lagoa de Albufeira is the calm alternative, shallow and noticeably warmer, and the best choice for small children or a first paddleboard.
  • The clothing-optional area is signposted and lies between the main beach and Praia das Bicas, so both preferences are easy to respect.
  • Bring cash for the smaller beach bars, and book a table at weekends in summer, when the village restaurants fill quickly.
  • Afternoon wind, the nortada, picks up on most summer days; mornings are calmer for swimming and the wind is what makes the lagoon good for kitesurfing.
  • The dunes and the fossil cliff are protected: stay on the wooden walkways and do not climb the escarpment, which is unstable.
  • Meco combines naturally with Sesimbra, Cabo Espichel or Arrábida in one day by car; it is not an easy day trip without one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Lisbon to Meco?

By car, cross the 25 de Abril bridge and follow the A2 and then the N378 towards Sesimbra and Aldeia do Meco, about 45 minutes from central Lisbon. There is no train; buses leave from Praça de Espanha and Sete Rios and take around an hour and a half.

Is Praia do Meco a naturist beach?

Only in part. Praia do Meco has a long-established clothing-optional section between the main beach and Praia das Bicas, clearly signposted, while the central area in front of the village and the beach bars is a conventional family beach.

Is Meco good for families with children?

Yes, with one caveat: the ocean is open Atlantic with a strong shorebreak, so for small children the shallow, warm water of Lagoa de Albufeira a few minutes away is the better option, and the main beach has lifeguards in season.

Where should I stay to be close to Meco?

Our Lisbon homes are well placed for a day at Meco. The Trendy Apartment in Bairro Alto is about 45 minutes by car, the Charming Villa with 4 Suites in Cascais and the Duplex Apartment with private pool in Estoril are about an hour and fifteen minutes away, and there are also local rentals in Aldeia do Meco and Sesimbra.

Can I visit Meco and Sesimbra on the same day?

Yes. They are about 20 minutes apart by the coastal road, so a morning at the beach or the lagoon and a fish lunch in Sesimbra harbour make a comfortable day, with Cabo Espichel easy to add on the way back.
